Chapter Thirteen

I awoke to the sound of birds chirping and a woman screaming. Bolting toward the patio door, I saw a grey haired woman screaming at the top of her lungs, pointing toward the swamp.

Eleanor and Dorothy surfaced from the bedroom, still dressed in what they wore yesterday. We made our way outside, trudging through the high grass to where the woman was standing. She gripped a shoe to her ample bosom.

“What’s all the hoopla about?” I asked the woman.

“He’s gone. Oh God, he’s gone.”

“Who is?”

“Eugene Bragsworth. He told me last night he was going to take a walk to clear his head and he never came back,” she sobbed.

“What makes you think he came out here?”

“He left via his patio door and here’s his shoe.” She handed me an oxford shoe. “It’s his. He was wearing it the last time I saw him.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t catch your name.”

“Eunice Bragsworth.”

“Are you related to Eugene?”

“He’s my husband.” She then glared at Dorothy. “It’s all your fault, you harlot. You were putting the moves on my husband.”

Dorothy’s eyes widened. “That’s not how it went. We were just friends.”

“Your husband nearly killed my Eugene. Maybe he came back to finish the job.”

“N-No my Frank wouldn’t do that. Plus, he threw me out.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

I interrupted the ladies. “So we have another shoe near the swamp.”

“I wonder if a gator got him,” Eleanor put in. “Just like what happened to the maids.”

“I doubt it, El. I’m not so sold on that idea.”

Eunice folded her arms. “All I know is that my husband is missing because of this woman.”

I rolled my eyes. This doesn’t make a lick of sense. Bridgett came running forward in a panicked state. “What’s happened?”

“My Eugene is missing. I found his shoe,” Eunice informed her. “Maybe that man that nearly killed him last night came back to finish the job and dumped his body for the gators.”

“My Frank isn’t a murderer,” Dorothy insisted.

“Where was he last night?”

“I don’t know. I told you he threw me out.”

“There’s a murderer loose around here is all I know,” Eunice cried. “My husband never hurt a flea.”

El interrupted her. “Nope. He just romanced other men’s wives.”

“It wasn’t my Eugene. It was that woman.” She pointed at Dorothy who quivered.

“I suppose you better call the sheriff, Bridgett. If anything, Eugene is missing.”

“Maybe the alligators got him like the maids,” Bridgett suggested.

“I’m about sick of that theory, but one thing is for certain. Frank couldn’t have done anything untoward to Eugene. He’s a reasonable man.”

“He did try and shoot him yesterday,” Bridgett reminded me.

Bridgett pulled her cell phone out and dialed 911 to report Eugene Bragsworth missing. Once she hung up she suggested, “We should go inside before another alligator comes along.”

“Or snakes,” I added. Lord knows Florida had its share of poisonous snakes and I’d rather not meet one first hand.

We congregated in the commons room that had leather sofas and recliner chairs. Along one wall there was a bookshelf packed with books and along the other was a large screen television affixed to the wall.
